Education

Children living in Lincoln are served by the Lincoln Public Schools district. The district is comprised of fifty-four schools, including six high schools—Lincoln High, East, Northeast, North Star, Southeast and Southwest—that are located within Lincoln. Additionally, Lincoln Public Schools also includes special interest high schools that focus on arts and humanities, science/zoo, entrepreneurship programs, and information technology focus programs. Several private and parochial elementary and middle schools are also available throughout Lincoln and are ready to serve students in a faith-based setting.

Once students graduate and are ready to continue their education, nearby colleges and universities such as the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Union College are ready to serve the higher learning needs of students. Bellevue University, Kaplan University, Southeast Community College and Doane College all have satellite campuses in Lincoln.

Economy & Job Market

Lincoln’s stable economy is a result of strong government, education and healthcare sectors. Saint Elizabeth Heart Hospital and the non-profit BryanLGH Medical Center have several large outpatient facilities throughout the city and four major hospitals. Many residents work in the medical, information technology, education, banking, insurance, and rail and truck transport industry sectors.

Attractions & Points of Interest

The City of Lincoln hosts a variety of community-wide events that encourage residents to come out and enjoy the festivities and catch up with friends and neighbors. Events that residents look forward to throughout the year include the Lincoln Marathon, high school state boys’ and girls’ basketball and volleyball tournaments, Jazz in June, International Thespian Festival at the University of Nebraska, Movies on the Green, the Lancaster County Fair, Capitol City Rib Fest, the Nebraska State Fair, Nebraska Cornhuskers football games, and the Star City Parade.

Residents of Lincoln take great pride in their local sports teams, including the University’s own football team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Other local teams that residents support are the Lincoln Saltdogs, an American Association independent minor league baseball team; junior ice hockey team the Lincoln Stars; and the No Coast Derby Girls, a local women’s roller derby league.

For live music and a happening nightlife, residents can check out the downtown section of O Street. Live music venues in the city include the Pershing Auditorium, Box Awesome, Duffy’s Tavern, Knickerbockers, the Zoo Bar, the Pla-Mor Ballroom, and Duggan’s Pub. The Lied Center also features live music and concerts, in addition to national tours of Broadway productions.

Live theatre patrons will be pleased to know that the Temple Building at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Lincoln Community Playhouse, the Haymarket Theatre, and the Loft at The Mill feature live performances courtesy of Lincoln’s local thespians.
Parks & Recreation
The City of Lincoln is made up of thirty-one neighborhoods and over 100 individual parks. The largest park in Lincoln’s extensive park system is Antelope Park. Antelope Park includes the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, where over 300 animals including crocodiles, Amur leopards, eagles, camels, and several primates reside, and the Sunken Gardens where guests are encourage to spend some time at meditating by the pond and waterfall. Other large-scale parks include Wilderness Park, Lake Park, Holmes Park, Woods Park, Tierra Park, Pioneers Park, and Oak Lake Park. Approximately ninety-nine miles of recreational trails connect the parks and the MoPac Trails runs through Lincoln.

Golf enthusiasts everywhere will be glad to know that Lincoln is within proximity to a number of challenging golf courses, both private and public. These include the Yankee Hill Country Club, Holmes Park Golf Course, Hidden Valley Golf Course, Wilderness Ridge Golf Club, Hillcrest Country Club, Firethorn Golf Club, and Pioneers Golf Course, among many others.
